Get-WELL Huntingburg Kicks Off a New Year with a Free Health Screening and Weight Loss Program

The Get-WELL Huntingburg Program is here again with a menu of programs for you and your Huntingburg friends in 2010! There will be an assortment of programs to wet your appetite!

If your new year’s resolution is to lose weight, improve your exercise habits, or simply eat healthier meals, then we have a variety of programs just for you!

The Health Ministry Team of Salem United Church of Christ is sponsoring the programs. for adults who live or work in the Huntingburg area. Our goal is to reduce the risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure in our community.

The focus this year is on weight loss and nutrition! The monthly nutrition and fitness programs will help individuals improve their health, reduce their risk for disease, and lose weight.

This third year of programming is funded through a generous grant from the Welborn Baptist Foundation as a part of their community health and health ministry programs. Salem United Church of Christ and local donors will cover the remaining expenses.

You may participate in two ways. You may choose to individually participate in any of the free programs as your schedule allows. Or, you may enroll in the year-long weight loss program called “Choose 8 To Lose Weight.” This in-depth, 9-month weight loss program allows a core group of 30 individuals to participate in the 7 nutrition classes taught by Memorial Hospital Health Educator, Susan Weisheit, three exercise classes, and the two fitness tracking programs. In addition, this core group will receive monthly weigh-ins, and a year-end free screening to monitor their success in relation to weight, blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose. The “Choose 8 To Lose Weight” members also will be entered in the “Biggest Choosers are Biggest Losers” contest with the winner receiving an added prize. All participants from the community or those in the “Choose 8 To Lose Weight” program will receive participation incentives throughout the year. Four nutrition programs will also be taught at The Guadalupe Center in both English and Spanish.

The Get-WELL Huntingburg project begins with the free health screening to the first 75 people who sign up for a screening appointment. The screening will be January 15 from 5:30-9:00 am at Salem Church, 202 E. 4th St. in Huntingburg. Call 812-481-2399 for an appointment. Optional PSA tests for men will be $10 and the take-home cancer kit will be $8. Included in the screening will be tests for weight, body mass index, body fat, blood pressure, cholesterol, chemistry panel and glucose.

Enrollment for the “Choose 8 To Lose Weight” program will be held at the screening and at the introductory meeting on February 4th at 6:00 pm at Salem Church.

to be held in Huntingburg

If you are looking to lose 8 or 80 pounds in 2010 and live or work in the Huntingburg area, choose the Get-WELL Huntingburg’s new program.

The “Choose 8 To Lose Weight” program is a 9-month nutrition and weight management program for adults wanting to lose weight with BMI (body mass index) ≥25. Because the program is completely free to participants, we will accept a core group of 30 members. Each member should want to lose and keep off a minimum of 5 or more pounds in the 9-month period of time. Members will be expected to participate actively in the various nutrition and fitness programs from February through October. Those enrolled will also have a chance to win the Biggest Chooser is the Biggest Loser contest by tracking weight loss and BMI (body mass index) monthly and finally in October. This group will be instrumental in providing local research to determine what types of community health programs work best for weight loss! You can be a part of this exciting project!

First, attend the health screening January 15, 2010. Then enroll in the program at the screening or attend the February 4 introductory meeting at 6:00 pm at Salem Church.
Each group member will be asked to attend nutrition programs on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6:30 pm starting in February. Introductory exercises classes will also be announced. Two walking and exercise tracking programs will be held, one in March-April and one in August-September. Monthly weigh-ins will be held on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month as well. A mid-year weigh-in will award incentives to those who have lost weight as well as year-end prizes for change in weight. The grand prize will go to the person that has lost the largest percentage in their BMI or body mass index (weight) in October.

Instructors and leaders will include Susan Weisheit and Ashley Recker, Health Educators from Memorial Hospital, and Tri-County YMCA exercise instructors.
