History of Salem UCC
Salem United Church of Christ has a rich history dating back to 1842 when the Evangelical Lutheran and Reformed Protestant Congregation held its first service. On December 30th of the same year, the first official church board was organized. Construction of the first church building began in the spring of 1844, with a total cost of $99.95. The second church building was constructed in 1859 at the corner of 4th and Walnut. The church was called to join the Evangelical Synod of the West in 1860. In 1889, the decision was made to change the name of the church to German Evangelical Salem Church. The parish hall was constructed in 1928. In 1936, the church adopted a new constitution and changed its name to Salem Evangelical and Reformed Church of Huntingburg. Finally, in 1957, the church became known as Salem United Church of Christ.
